Introduction to SSP
Established in 1984, Such Salinger Peters is a multi-disciplinary consulting engineering practice delivering civil, structural, drainage and flood risk solutions across residential, commercial and public sector projects across the UK.
Combining technical expertise with practical design experience, we help clients move projects from concept through to completion.
Our office is currently based in Poole, after previously spending some time in Winfrith, Wareham, Bournemouth, Highcliffe & Chepstow. Steph Howard, Director and Senior Engineer works from this new location and is supported by Jim Peters, Traline Moore, Roy Peel, Fred Payne, Patrick Mahon and Liz Parkinson together with other appropriately qualified support staff, to offer the highest customer service and knowledgeable support for our clients.
Our team at SSP offers a full range of services all under one roof. We actively engage with our clients to provide Civil Engineering design capability across a wide variety of sectors including Private, Public and Commercial projects. Providing, contract preparation, specification drafting and contract supervision resources, along with data collection and presentation resources for Impermeable Area Studies. We are currently working on a variety of schemes for private developers, continued works with the Environment Agency, New Forest District Council, Dorset Council and individual property owners. We are also providing support for various planning consultants and architects across the South Coast.
History
Such Salinger Peters was founded in 1984 by David Such and his father Reg, when they joined forces with Ron Salinger, a fellow University Graduate from Cardiff University. The Company starting out as ‘Such Salinger Partnership’.
Over the following years, the business grew after starting their journey in Chepstow, gaining clients such as British Steel, Wessex Water and McCarthy and Stone all in the early years of business.
In 1983, prior to the birth of Such Salinger Partnership, Jim Peters worked alongside Ron Salinger in Highcliffe, where he subsequently sat his ICE membership examination and achieved Chartered status. Jim decided to spread his wings and venture out into the world of engineering and left Such Salinger Partnership in the mid 1980’s and set up his own small design consultancy – Canford Contract Services, where he enjoyed his loose working arrangement. After a number of years, he joined Wessex Water as a full-time resident engineer.
In 1998 Ron and David approached Jim to see if he would return to Such Salinger Partnership as a Director and the company evolved to what it is known today as ‘Such Salinger Peters’.
In 1998, the operations of the business had grown in Dorset with a third office created to assist with the nuclear decommissioning in the area. However, in 2007, the markets changed and the company had to refocus and reduce staffing levels. In 2012, the mechanical and electrical office was sold to David Such, thus enabling the Dorset Offices to focus on Civil & Structural Engineering clients.
In October 2014, Ron Salinger decided it was time to hang up his slide rule and put away the drawing board, announcing his retirement. Having seen the firm grow from the very start, through various hurdles and many high points, he was leaving the firm in the safe hands of senior management – Jim Peters.
In 2021, the company moved to their current offices in Poole, at 51 Sterte Avenue West, BH15 2AJ.
In 2026, Jim Peters announced he would like to slow down and look at reducing his hours to take retirement over the next few years. Long-time employee Steph Howard had shown her interest in becoming a shareholder over the last couple of years and saw this as a good opportunity to take the plunge and jump straight into the running of the business. Having worked within the company for 13 years, starting out as an apprentice administrator in 2013, studying for and completing the HNC in Civil Engineering in 2020, and becoming a Senior Engineer, Steph thought this was the perfect time to step up and take on the new role of Director and owner of the business.
